The Republic of Namibia is located in southwest Africa. Namibia has a population of about 2.1 million inhabitants and an area of 824,292 km²; about 4 inhabitants per square kilometer.
After Mongolia, Namibia is considered the most sparsely populated independent country in the world. The population is concentrated in a few cities and the fertile north of the country. Around 44 percent of the population live in the central north of the country. A third live in central Namibia, with more than 400,000 people residing in Windhoek alone. Just seven percent of the population live in the south of the country, while the west and the Namib Desert are almost deserted, with the exception of the port cities. Around 57 percent of the population live in rural areas. The country also has one of the best medical systems on the African continent. In 2004, Namibia had 30 doctors per 100,000 inhabitants, making it one of the best doctor-to-population ratios in Africa.

Travel information about Namibia
Entry, security, food & co.
International visitors require a valid passport and all other necessary travel documents. Your passport should have at least three free visa pages (we recommend four if you are traveling to more than one country) (this does not include the pages used for the police endorsement). If there are not enough free pages, you may be refused entry.
You should check the entry requirements for Namibia with your travel agency or consulate to ensure that they have not changed at short notice.
Please ensure that you have applied for and obtained all necessary visas prior to arrival. Africa220, its staff, its agents and its operators are not liable if you are denied entry due to not having a visa.
The Namibia Dollar (N$ or NAD) is the currency of Namibia and was introduced in 1993, three years after independence. The Namibia Dollar replaced the South African Rand (ZAR), which had also been the official currency in Namibia until then. However, there is a 1:1 parity between the two currencies, so that the South African rand is still accepted as a means of payment everywhere in Namibia (although not vice versa, with the exception of areas close to the border). Banknotes in the denominations of 100, 50 and 10 Namibia dollars, coins in the denominations of 5 and 1 Namibia dollar as well as 50, 10 and 5 cents have been in circulation since 1993. Since 1996 there has also been a banknote in the denomination of 20 Namibia dollars, and since 2001 also in the denomination of 200 Namibia dollars.
Foreign currency can be exchanged at local banks and bureaux de change. You can also withdraw money from ATMs with your MasterCard.
We recommend that you travel either as part of an organized tour with a tour guide or by rental car. Public transportation is virtually non-existent.
There are some basic health matters that require care and attention. The following points are recommended as a guideline. Please ask your doctor for information and check with the health authorities before your departure if there are any changes to the health regulations.
Malaria
Malaria is particularly prevalent in northern Namibia. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for travelers in southern Africa. Please remember that the best precaution is a preventive one:
– Avoid being bitten with the help of good mosquito repellent. Some lodges offer homemade insect repellent, but please bring your own if you have sensitive skin.
– Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants and thick socks in the evening.
– If available, please use the mosquito net over the bed.
– If you are staying in a bungalow or tent, please spray the room with a suitable insecticide so that any mosquitoes that fly into your room are quickly killed.
– Mosquito incense sticks are also effective.
Safety instructions
First of all, Namibia is one of the most relaxed and safest travel destinations in Africa with a friendly, unobtrusive population and excellent travel infrastructure. Of course, there are also a few points in Namibia concerning general safety for tourists, dangerous animals, diseases, risks in road traffic, etc. that should be considered and observed:
For rental car tours:
The biggest risk may come as a surprise to most vacationers. Driving on Namibia’s large and empty roads is actually easy and relaxed despite driving on the left. Your self-drive trip will be pleasant and safe if you drive calmly, expect obstacles at all times and are prepared for death-defying overtaking maneuvers by oncoming traffic on the country’s few asphalt roads.
The car wreck on display at a rental company in Windhoek is also intended to raise awareness of the second side of the coin. Out of 200 cars from this rental company, 15 of them overturned in 2013!
Unfortunately, the vastness of the country, the empty roads and the beefy four-wheel drive vehicle invite you to speed. Distances are often underestimated, time runs out towards the evening, high wheels, engine capacity and horsepower make men’s hearts beat faster.
But suddenly a kudu, a cow or a car appears behind the crest. And thanks to the high weight and center of gravity, you’ll somersault into the ditch with a determined turn of the steering wheel, so your safety in Namibia is primarily in your own hands!
Poverty-related risks:
The differences between rich and poor are much greater in Namibia than in Europe. Glittering jewelry, handbags and expensive cameras are correspondingly tempting. At the lodges, on the country’s typical travel routes and in the small towns of Lüderitz and Swakopmund, you won’t have any problems with this.
But as the largest city in the country, Windhoek unfortunately involves a certain amount of risk. Exercise a little caution there!
Even in daylight, cameras or handbags are occasionally snatched from unfrequented street corners. And car windows are a popular target if bags with perhaps valuable contents are visible behind them.
After dark, it is best to travel around Windhoek by car or cab to avoid possible risks.
There is very little violence outside the home in Namibia compared to many other countries. And there is practically no xenophobia towards whites, which could be fatal for tourists. And compared to other capital cities in the world, Windhoek remains a very manageable, quiet and relatively safe city!
„Biltong“ – the typical dish consists of dried meat from ostrich, kudu, antelope, oryx or beef. It is eaten dry or soaked and then processed like fresh meat. There is grilled meat everywhere, and fish is also often served. The beer is brewed according to the German purity law.
Due to its location south of the equator, the seasons in Namibia are the opposite of those in the northern hemisphere. A very dry desert climate with a mild winter prevails, with moderate temperatures during the day and sometimes cold temperatures at night. The summer is very warm, sometimes even very hot. Pleasant temperatures can be found along the coast (due to the Benguela Current), but cold days must also be expected in some places. The rainy season lasts from January to March.
In Namibia, people generally dress casually and comfortably.
Bring cool, light and comfortable clothing in the Namibian summer, as temperatures in some areas can quickly reach 30°C. Also bring an umbrella or raincoat in the Namibian summer, as this is the time when it rains the most. A light jacket or poncho is recommended. Don’t forget your swimsuit.
Namibian winters are generally mild. Nevertheless, there are also days when the temperatures drop, especially at night, so take a sweater and jacket with you.
Always bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, as the sun’s rays can be very strong, even in the winter months.
Sturdy shoes are important all year round, with warm socks in winter.
For game drives, we advise you to wear neutral-colored clothing.
What else you should pack:
Binoculars, insect repellent, charger for camera and cell phone.
The voltage is 220/240 volts. Three-pin plugs are usually required, but adapters are available at the receptions of guesthouses and hotels.
The Republic of Namibia is located in the southwest of the African continent and borders Angola to the north and Zambia with the Caprivi Strip, Botswana to the east, the Republic of South Africa to the southeast and south and the Atlantic Ocean to the west.
